Last fall my buddy Ivan Diaz and I decided to wake up at 5:00am, grab our boards and watch the sunrise. Sure we had work early in the morning but waking up a couple of hours earlier to watch the sunrise while we tackled some hills seemed well worth it.
Along with longboarding we both are big into photography. Needless to say, we of course had our cameras with us. So throughout the morning as we cruised and carved up and down some country roads we were taking pictures and videos.
Later that week, I was checking out the Jones Soda website and saw they had a contest section. One of their contests was called Road Trip Jones 2011. They asked for a picture submission in relation to a road trip along with a short story regarding the picture. The image could be of a road trip half way across the country or even a road trip within the city you live.
I had just taken some pictures of me and Ivan longboarding and we did drive a short ways into the country for a good view and some good roads. I figured why not? I submitted the image, wrote a story about our waking up early to longboard with the sunrise and gave it a shot.
A couple of days later, I received an email stating that the staff of Jones Soda liked my picture and that it would draw attention from the judges. This is when I began getting excited and telling friends and family about it. Winners would receive a case of soda, a backpack and distribution across the continental United States as well as Canada with my picture on the label. On top of those winners, one grand prize winner would get an RV road trip with 3 friends to any destination within 500 miles of the winner’s home town!
The contest entry was in August and I was chosen as a label winner a couple of months later. Stoked about it and having received my Jones Soda backpack, I was talking it up. Who doesn’t like free stuff?
Months went on without word or vouchers for the case of soda. The once quickly responsive Jones Soda staff was no longer responding to my emails and I figured they had not followed through with their contest. On their site, my pictured was listed as chosen but didn’t say that it was on a label. At one point I was an affiliate marketer for Jones Soda and I ended up taking that down after all of this.
Fast forward to last week, almost half a year after I was chosen for a label, I receive a letter in the mail telling me that my picture is being put on their bottles! Pretty crazy and unexpected at this point. I never received the case of soda and I never found out which person’s road trip picture won them the 500 mile road trip.
I’m just kinda shocked that it actually ended up happening. I was thinking for a while that the contest was a temporary excitement to draw in more people to drink their soda without actually giving anything to the applicants or supposed winners. Maybe they won’t, either way, its pretty cool to see a picture of me and Ivan on the label of a soda ;)
So if you happen to be at the store and come across Jones Soda, you may see us on their Green Apple label longboarding and taking in a beautiful morning ;)
